a night that got contentious, to say the least. some political observers pointing to a new low in this already-rough race. the tone set from the very start. >> reporter: bitter from the beginning. no handshakes for the nominees. almost immediately, donald trump facing questions about the vulgar audio that's thrown his campaign into crisis. >> you bragged that you have sexually assaulted women. do you understand that? >> no, i didn't say that at all. i don't think you understood what was said. i'm not proud of it. i apologized to my family. i apologized to the american people. >> reporter: that audio, part of a 2005 conversation with billy bush during an "access hollywood" taping, a program produced by nbc universal. >> when you're a star, they let you do it. you can do everything. >> whatever you want. >> grab them by the [ bleep ]. >> i'm very embarrassed by it, i hate it, but it is locker room talk, and it is one of those things. i will not the hell out of isis.

audience, trump's surprise guests, apparently intended to rattle hillary clinton. several women who have accused her husband of sexual misconduct over the years, and on stage, trump went there. >> bill clinton was abusive to women. hillary clinton attacked those same women. and attacked them viciously. four of them here tonight. >> reporter: nbc news has learned the original plan calls for the women to sit in trump's family box facing the former president. but debate officials refused to get security involved. before the town hall began, the women joining trump for what was originally billed as a prep session photo-op. >> okay, donald. i know you're into big diversion tonight. anything to avoid talking about your campaign and the way it is exploding and the way republicans are leaving you. >> reporter: at times, trump loomed over his rival's shoulder, both circling the stage with clinton on defense on her e-mails. >> obviously, if i were to do it over again, i would not.

and this morning, we are looking at a new cnn/orc snap poll of voters showing that many believe hillary clinton won the debate 57%-34% for donald trump. but she didn't land as many blows as the first presidential debate. donald trump, meanwhile, having a performance to rally his base, but he needs to expand his appeal if he has a shot at coming back in november. >> hallie jackson, thank you so much. kellyanne conway, donald trump's campaign manager. good morning, thanks for being with up. it was a late night. i know. >> yes, thank you. >> let me start by asking about this scenario that it sounds like the trump campaign was trying to get going at the beginning of the debate where the four clinton -- bill clinton accusers would come face to face with bill clinton himself. number one, was that the plan? and number two, what was the hope there? what was the campaign hoping to accomplish? >> i have to correct the

how does that fix what people are upset about yutrump for? >> let's not conflate issues. this has to do with hillary clinton and how she shames and blames the women in bill clinton's life. these women came around and said, look at the modus operandi that hillary clinton deployed against these women. in the case of kathy shelton, that has nothing to do with bill if that were true -- people can make their own decisions about whether or not it is -- i guess the question is, it's donald trump who answer to answer for himself. >> and he did that. you just played the clip. you just played the clip, savannah. respectfully, you just played the clip of him saying i have apologized to my family and the american people. then he talked about the difference between words and actions and the way hillary clinton treated these women.

offer a more heart-felt apology. he wrote off this tape essentially to "locker room talk." is that the end of it? is that all we're going to hear from mr. trump on this issue? >> that is not all he said. that would be a terrible misrepresentation of the one minute and 32 seconds of video that he came out -- >> he kept coming back to the point, it was locker room talk. so my question is, is that all he really has to say? >> no. what he has to say was that it was he apologized for it, and he said it did not represent who he is. in the video posted on friday night, his immediate response, lester, which was buttressed by last night's apology and explanation, he said there is a difference between words and actions, and many americans agree. >> leslie, was this a good night for american politics? >> i think it was a good night for democracy in this way, they really have a contrast, they really have a choice of two candidates this election cycle next month.

hillary clinton over her deleted e-mails. she was a u.s. senator, secretary of state, he took her to task on syria, on iraq, on benghazi, on the fact into she's gotten hundreds and hundreds of entries from ambassador steven ns and othestevens and others about getting more security in benghazi. there were plenty of issues to hear in that 90 minutes. >> we're out of time. kellyanne conway with the t campaign, thanks very much. now rob by mook, hillary clinton's campaign manager. i want to ask you about the start of the debate. there was no handshake. they came out, went to their respective chairs. was that by design? was there a discussion ahead of time? >> i don't know that there was any plan either way for the candidates. i think they just came on stage and starting the debate. >> robby, to no one's surprise, donald trump brought up the accusers, the bill clinton

but mrs. clinton, secretary clinton, didn't address that at all. she went into other areas. why not? >> you know, lester, hillary came to this debate to talk about the issues, to talk about the policies and plans that she has that are going to make a difference in people's lives. donald trump came to try to rescue his spiraling campaign. he wanted to throw a lot of mud, throw hillary off her game, and make this campaign about something else and unfortunately, he doubled down on his non-apology for what he said in that video that came out last friday. he didn't even seem to take the matter very seriously. he called it locker room talk. didn't acknowledge the severity of the situation. and then he pulled a stunt where he brought those individuals in to do a facebook live event before the debate.

manager robby mook. thanks for being with us. chuck todd, nicolle wallace and steve kornacki, good morning, guys. where do we even start? chuck, i guess does this change anything about the race? >> oh, gosh. i mean i don't even want to look at it in conventional terms. i feel like in the light of day you want to see what did we see here? i mean this is not -- again, it wasn't a conventional moment of presidential debate politics. debate as only going to be remembered for two things. the trump campaign's decision to bring bill clinton's accusers and then create this diversion on the video -- on the lewd video, and him saying during the debate he wants to put his opponent in jail. that's will be the take-away. what part of that is helpful to the trump campaign? i don't have any idea. i don't think it is. the vice grip that the rest of the republican party is even in

. we're back at 8:46 with "today food." all this week we're putting fall's bounty of seasonal produce to use. owners of fresco here in new guys, great to see you. been a while since we've done this. we're going to start with a raviolo. something we created at fresco. let's start with our pasta sheets. you need a little bit of butter. it is italian food. eggs, ricotta cheese, nutmeg, sage, butter nut squash.

>> you can do pumpkin. >> butternut squash is able all year round. i think it is a bett ter mouth feel with butternut squash. braise them down. let it cool. mash it up. add a little ricotta cheese to this. then add a little parmesan clees to this. a little nutmeg to this. if you don't mind the pepper and salt. you got to kind of get the concept of that. we then tip sheets are available at fine -- >> buy just like that? >> five foot long, three inches wide. then we've laid that out. we're going to pipe in then the mixture of what we just did here. just as simple as this. we're going to then close this. let's egg wash that real quick. seal the deal real quick.

you got the feeling of this. correct? then we're just going to in a sense, keep rolling it and rolling it. >> the idea is, this is a single serving. raviolo. put in water for three or four minutes. it's a butter sauce. it is necessary. add a little parmesan ee pepper again, a little fresh nutmeg. you're just going to heat that up real quick. >> they're trying it downstairs. >> packed with nutrients, vitamins. here we have our artichokes. we save them, cut the ends, peel them down to the yellow. we shave it here. we put them in lemon water.
